CAT Tracks for January 17, 2009
APPLES & ORANGES

Is it a "sign"?

You know...those "coincidences" that seem just a little too coincidental?

Since Rod Serling is not available, allow me to do the honors...

In yesterday's "A Tale of Three Districts", CAT Tracks presented the published annual financial statements of Cairo, Century, and Meridian...financial statements that clearly show that Cairo School District Number One (despite crying wolf, uh, "FOP") has significantly more educational dollars available than a couple of its neighboring districts...neighboring districts that have seen fit to bestow reasonable salary increases upon it educational employees, something Cairo does NOT seem inclined to do.

Well, lo and behold, what arrives in the mail today?

Why Monday's Pub...the weekly area-centered publication by the folks that bring us The Cairo Citizen.

In this week's "Pub", what should appear but the Annual Financial Statement for Shawnee Community College...showing its fund balances as of June 30, 2008. (Actually, THAT date makes the information "apples". The fact that we are talking a community college rather than a K-12 school district makes the information "oranges".)

Well, SCC wins the "Educational Fund" competition...NARROWLY edging out Cairo School District Number One.

The final results...

  1. Shawnee Community College - $2,535,234

  2. Cairo School District - $2,397,568

  3. Century School District - $1,631,513

  4. Meridian School District - $1,234,570

Hmmm...wonder if that's why Cairo school officials are being so tight-fisted?

It's NOT that they are broke...which by published reports, they obviously are NOT!

NO! Maybe Cairo officials are following the old maxim that since they're #2, they must try harder!!!

Is their "educational goal" for 2009 to become the #1 hoarder of educational dollars???

Become the #1 hoarder while students do without educational supplies and programs? While employees are pressured to scrimp and do without...and look elsewhere for employment?

What makes the situation even worse is that the BOE DOES SPEND MONEY...on the things IT wants...over $100,000 a year on lawyers, free housing and utilities for its $100,000 Superintendent, $4,000 conferences in Atlanta, food at every BOE meeting (Regular and Special), and the list could go on, and on, and on...

And, hell, they even tried to give away the high school back in October...pay Egyptian and Meridian to take our students...make Cairo students travel elsewhere to get their education.

Don't get me started...

I need to go for a long walk...and cool down.

In the meantime, take a look at the financial report that fired me up this morning...
