Fire Destroys Seven Classrooms at Poplar Bluff School

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. - An overnight fire destroys seven classrooms at a kindergarten school campus on Main Street in Poplar Bluff.

Poplar Bluff resident Nathan Tolley called in the fire around two this morning. Tolley lives behind the Mark Twain Elementary kindergarten campus.

According to Poplar Bluff School District associate superintendent Clint Johnson, the fire destroyed five modular classroom trailers. In all, the school has lost seven classrooms. More than a 140 students attended class in the trailers that were destroyed.

According to the Poplar Bluff police department the fire is under control and there have been no injuries reported.

So far there is no word on what caused this fire but the investigation is just beginning.

This fire has caused the school district to cancel classes at this school. According to associate superintendent Clint Johnson, classes at the Mark Twain Elementary School - which includes the kindergarten - have been canceled for today and Friday because of this fire.

However, all teachers at the Mark Twain Elementary need to report to school this morning and meet at the library at 8:15.

All other schools in the Poplar Bluff school district are in session today.
