$3 million to be presented for new hospital in Cairo
By Christy Hendricks
Community Health & Emergency Services, Inc. in Cairo will receive $3 million to help build a 16 bed hospital wing adjoining the Cairo Mega Clinic.
The funding comes from the State Capital Construction bill that was passed by the Illinois Legislature in 2009.
Officials will present a $3 million check to CHESI on Wednesday at the Cairo Mega Clinic.
Once $3 million in state capital construction funds is released, the project could be completed in two years. The other $3 million will come from federal funds and private foundations.
Construction is estimated to begin in the summer of 2012.
The project is estimated to create about 40 news jobs during construction with an additional 90 jobs after it was completed.
CHESI serves seven counties.
The clinic provides basic doctor and dental, and outpatient surgeries, with a lab and radiology department on site, but the expansion will create a 16 bed wing with 24/7 emergency services.
The closest hospitals are Sikeston and Cape Girardeau, at least 30 minutes away.
