NEW CONSTRUCTION AT CAIRO JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL |
When I first heard that the incredible shrinking school district, aka CSD #1, was thinking of constructing a new Vocational School/Administrative Center, the word "folly" came to mind (among many other words not printable in this "family" newsletter.)
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines "folly" as "lack of good sense or normal prudence and foresight". The synonyms are even more spot on: "insanity, madness, simplicity, absurdity, foolishness, unwisdom, fatuousness, imbecility."
I hadn't been out to dear old CHS in a while, so Sunday, I ventured forth. OMG. Not what I expected to see. I mean, the addition at the front/south end of the complex looks like a new administrative facility, but the huge structure behind it? Doesn't look like any vocational building that I ever saw. It looks like a gymnasium...WTF?!
Well, as you would expect, I was moved to catty commentary, once again, pontificating on the folly of constructing a vocational school when most of our previous vocational programs were eliminated from the curriculum when the students refused to take the courses. No demand, so why supply a building? What, CSD's educational philosophy is built on a "Field of Dreams"...build it and they will come? Only in the movies.
Then, I hit paws. Decided to inquire of people who might know what was going on. Well, that's when things got REALLY weird.
Since what I am about to say has not been verified by multiple sources, especially no one from the ranks of the 'powers that be', let's just say that 'I heard it on the grapevine.'
So...
...just what is the new structure that CSD is building?
Would you beieve a funeral parlor?
Ha, ha, ha. Neither would I.
Then, again, this is Cairo School District Number One!
Rumor has it that the new vocational school was repurposed to be a gymnasium. Sadly, the change of direction resulted in a building which apparently is too small to be a regulation gym...not enough room for the floor and bleachers. So, the new space will be the site of future funerals that were previously held in the existing gymnasium. Rumor also has it that the new building can be used to hold community meetings that were previously held in the cafeteria.
Talk about FOLLY!
I want to close this post with a song, one that frequently comes to mind in moments like this...
