Sheriff: Superintendent of Illinois high school where teachers on strike found dead in home

By Associated Press

OTTAWA, Ill. (AP) — The superintendent of an Illinois high school where teachers are on strike has been found dead in his home.

The LaSalle County Sheriff's Office says John V. Harrison died at his Dayton Township home of an apparent suicide Sunday afternoon. The 41-year-old was superintendent of Ottawa Township High School.

Teachers union president Glenn Weatherford declined comment late Sunday. A message left for school board president George Hupp wasn't immediately returned.

Teachers went on strike Sept. 30. They're objecting to a school board offer that would require them to chip in for family health insurance coverage. About 1,600 students attend the school.

The Daily Times of Ottawa reported that both sides met briefly Sunday afternoon but reached no agreement.
