ACL OFFICE FLOATS INTO CAIRO

Expect a follow-up article in Time Magazine to last month's "Postcard: Cairo. You remember...the article that quoted Cairo's Mayor as he did his "drive by" of the Ace of Cups?

Maybe this time, they will feature a picture of Mr. Mayor...in his canoe...doing a "paddle by"!

Word of caution to Mr. Mayor...

I'd watch your choice of analogies...the "Rome wasn't built in a day" thing. That's liable to spawn some catty comments during our next round of house fires...something having to do with you playing a country violin!

New business floats to Cairo

By Carly O'Keefe

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - A new business floated into Cairo Illinois.

American Commercial Lines, or ACL, is a transportation company based in Jeffersonville, Indiana that builds barges for river freight hauling. This week the company literally floated a new office complex down river from Indiana to Cairo.

The company's northern operations management team will relocate near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to oversee local production.

Because the jobs are moving from Indiana, there won't be many jobs created immediately, but ACL CEO Mike Ryan says he hopes down the line the new facility may offer careers on the river.

"It might be a short-term move of some jobs, but long term we'd like to partner with the local schools to be a creator of mariner jobs in our industry," Ryan said.

Cairo felt tough economic times way before the recession hit the rest of the country, and Mayor Judson Childs hopes this new business may serve as a beacon of hope--signaling better times ahead.

"Now we're moving on up," Childs said. "I'm grateful for ACL and other businesses coming here. I'm sure we won't get there all at once, but Rome wasn't built in a day."

ACL isn't the only business coming to town. Childs says a company called River Bend Rice will also soon call Cairo home. That business is expected to hold a ribbon cutting next month.
