CAT Tracks for March 23, 2010
THREE-DAY WEEKEND

Every week?!

Although the Illinois House gave its overwhelming (81-21) approval, don't get your hopes up...

On a psychological note, those seemingly endless days would get an hour and 45 minutes longer, extended to make up for the missing day.

On the other hand...

In a school district with a Superintendent who savors his "Sweet Home Chicago" weekends, never say never.

Plus...

In keeping with established past practice, early Friday noon departures would now take place on Thursday!

Hmmm...

Upon further consideration, if I were a betting CAT...

Ill. House: Let schools move to 4-day weeks

Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois House wants to give struggling schools a chance to save money by offering classes only four days a week.

A 4-day week would reduce costs such as transporting students to school.

Rep. Bill Black says his bill would require schools that drop a day of instruction to offer longer hours the other four days. That way, students would end up with the same amount of time in the classroom.

The State Board of Education would review any plan to drop a day of instruction.

The measure passed 81-21 on Monday. It now goes to the Illinois Senate.

The bill is HB4886.
