MORE CAIRO HOUSES BURN |
After visiting the scene of the crime...
Two houses were gutted. Unfortunately much of the frames remain...creating a worse eyesore than before.
A third adjacent house was affected, but the extent of the damage was unclear due to the 10-foot tall (or taller) weeds, bushes, and trees in front.
Such is Labor Day Weekend in Cairo...

Early morning fire burns through Cairo
by Heartland News
CAIRO, IL (KFVS) Another day brings another blaze to the city of Cairo. A fire early Sunday morning ripped through several buildings in town, resulting in a call for extra help.
Police tell Heartland News the fire started around 3:15 Sunday morning in a building at 22nd and Martin Luther King.
Crews say the fire quickly spread from that building to several others.
The fire is so big the fire department had to call in help from Mounds, Mounds City, Tamms Charleston, McClure and several other departments.
This fire comes after a blaze destroyed an empty building early Saturday morning and another downtown building late Thursday night. Thursday's fire was ruled arson. However, investigators haven't said whether they think the last two blazes were intentionally set.

People in Cairo say fire trucks are a common sight
by Heartland News
Cairo, IL -- (KFVS) Since September 3rd firefighters in Cairo have had to battle three separate fires.
One on Thursday, the other early Saturday morning and the latest around 3:15a.m. Sunday morning.
People who live in Cairo say they have gotten used to the sound of fire trucks and the sight of flames.
They also say the fires might actually be a good thing.
"now i'm not concerned the next house will be mine. Half of them are falling down so in the long run I guess maybe it's helping us cause cairo's so run down" Marcus Rushing said.
Mayfield and others are quick to add that they are concerned that a firefighter or someone else may get hurting during one of the fires.
All three of the recent fires are under investigation.
