CAUGHT CAT NAPPING

Well...at least the CAT Tracks editor!

When he awakened shortly after 7 a.m., he discovered that two other CATs (one active/one retired) had covered for him...spotted yet another Cairo fire, as reported in the story below.

Just so that you don't think that I was shirking my duties...

When I had awakened at my normal time of 2 a.m., I visited the KFVS website (among others)...nothing. While I was busying typing away on the earlier posts that you found when YOU awakened this morning, the house in question caught fire...unbeknownwst to Moi. (As I reminded you with the last fire...this old CAT is hearing-impaired and in the wee hours doesn't plug in his miracle ears. At 5 a.m., CAT Tracks mission accomplished, this ol' CAT decided the time was right for a power nap. During that time, the house finished burning to the ground.

Bottom Line:

CATs are on duty...24/7/365!

Fire Chief: One person arrested after early morning house fire in Cairo

By Heartland News

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - Firefighters in Cairo got an early morning call to the second structure fire in three days.

Thursday morning, firefighters were called to a house fire at 24th and Washington Street around 1. They arrived to find a 2-story home on fire 2402 Washington.

A Cairo firefighter tells us there were people who lived at the home, but when they arrived they were not inside. The people who lived in the home were not injured, and were taken to the police station to stay warm.

The Cairo fire chief has now confirmed police have arrested one person in relation to this fire, but it is not one of the two people who lived in the home. As of 7:25 the chief was not saying exactly why the person was arrested.

As of 6 a.m. arson investigators were on the scene, but investigators are not releasing any details as to a suspected cause at this time.

Earlier in the morning, around 3 a.m., the roof had collapsed into the basement burning home. A firefighter says the fire probably started on the second story, then spread down to the basement inside the walls and back up.

Firefighters were able to save some items from the home. But by 3:30 were letting the fire burn, trying to keep the flames under control and keep the fire from spreading to a nearby house.

By 6 a.m. the whole home was destroyed. Both floors and walls had collapsed into the basement are were continuing to burn.

One of the homes next to the burning house has received some siding damage. There is also at least 1 car that was sitting next to the home has been destroyed. Another car nearby also appears to be damaged.

The cold weather was also creating problems for the firefighters. Around 3:30 Thursday morning the temperature was around 15 degrees.

One firefighter was slightly hurt when he slipped and fell on ice.

The other large fire earlier this week was a four story empty building on Commercial Monday night. That fire destroyed the building.

The cause of the first fire was determined to be accidental, even though four people were arrested for being inside the empty building when the fire began. They were arrested for theft and burglary from the building.
