REGULAR BOE MEETING/PUBLIC HEARING - ADDENDUM

Okay, a loyal reader of CAT Tracks has responded to today's post about the Cairo Board of Education (or more specifically, the "CATty Commentary" contained therein)...a "Comment" if you will (like they do on real blogs):

(Editor's Note: For brevity's sake, I have combined the exchanges.)

I would like to pose a serious question. With all their propaganda about closing this, that or the other, does it make sense to spend all this money to make Emerson bigger? If we are losing students right and left how does that compute? As I mentioned yesterday, move the sixth grade to the high school. There is plenty of room up there. That would also eliminate two teaching positions it seems. Hopefully that would be addressed by attrition. Where is the FOP in all this? I mean, it is not the Union's job to get rid of teachers, but it is the FOP's job to assure fiscal responsibility.

I think what I really mean is, THEY CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! Either our enrollment is dangerously shrinking to the point we might have to close or we need more room. Both are not possible.

Excellent point! Actually, I had addressed that very issue in one of my earlier drafts. Somehow it ended up on the cutting room floor. The FOP? They had the closing of the high school and sending the kids to Meridian on their early list of "solutions" to CSD #1's financial problems. (Superintendent) Swopes blew that out of the water with his remarks at a joint Cairo-Meridian School Board meeting in October 2008...and his follow-up "(Dis)missive to Meridian". (I would venture to say that THAT remains his only positive contribution to the District as of this date.)

As for your keen (albeit naive) observation that "THEY CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!" Never say never...'cause they always try. "Contradiction" has been the consistant trademark of the words and actions of District officials. Never expect reason and logic from the rationally-impaired, and...it makes perfect sense to them!

BTW, Old Wascally One...

I was also going to point out a CATty "concern"...that God forbid the District ever start GAINING students. In light of how they have prospered from losing students, THAT would surely be the death knell of the District!
