One killed in construction accident in Alexander Co.

By Heartland News

ALEXANDER COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Alexander County Coroner Willie Bingham says one person died in a construction accident on Route 146.

Mark Hasheider with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department says it happened in a construction area where workers were pouring concrete and something collapsed. Someone was trapped, but was removed about 1:40 p.m.

The name of the worker has not been released. Heartland News is told he was one of the supervisors.

It happened just east of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge on Route 146 near East Cape Girardeau before Route 3.

It happened around 1:15 Tuesday afternoon.

It happened on the north side of 146 in an area of new construction on a bridge. Workers were with Jones Construction out of Marion, Illinois.

It was a very emotional scene. Within about 25 minutes firefighters recovered the victim.

Firefighters say originally they thought several people were trapped.

Cape Girardeau firefighters, McClure, and Alexander County responded.

Firefighters in the middle of the action said it was one of the most unusual situations they've had to face dealing with wet concrete as it sets, all while trying to save a life and keep themselves safe.

Traffic was backed up on Route 146 and Route 3 while emergency crews worked at the scene.
