First, a REMINDER...the regular meeting of the Cairo Financial Oversight Panel which was to have been held on March 21st is being held today - March 28, 2011 - at 10:30 a.m. in the District Central Office Board Room. The tentative agenda was previously posted.
Secondly, Cairo Superintendent Leotis D. Swopes sent notice to the heads of the District's four unions that states in part:
On March 17th, Superintendent Swopes had recommended and the BOE had approved the dismissal of 7 probationary teachers and 5 tenured teachers.
The memo goes on to re-list the cuts in non-certified positions previously recommended and approved by the BOE at its March 17th meeting.
Bottom Line: The BOE previously voted to fire 20 District employees (including 12 teachers.) Upon further review, they have changed their collective mind and decided to "only" fire 19 District employees (including 11 teachers.)
According to the March 22, 2011 memo from Superintendent Swopes...
"As you are aware, the District is considering a reduction in force due to financial difficulties facing the District. The District has modified its initial plan and currently intends to non-renew 7 probationary teachers, and to also honorably dismiss 4 tenured teachers..."
The Board of Education intends to discuss this decision at a special meeting scheduled for March 29, 2011 at 6:00 P.M. at the Cairo Community Education Center, 2403 MLK Avenue, Cairo, IL."
