Cairo selects Tyrone Coleman as mayor

THE SOUTHERN

Cairo has rebuffed Judson Childs' efforts for a second term as mayor.

Tyrone Coleman was elected Tuesday night to serve as the town's mayor, narrowly edging out Childs. Coleman received 567 votes, as opposed to Childs' 539. Childs was first elected in 2007 to replace Paul Farris, who also served only one term.

Coleman will be joined in city government by Linda Jackson, who easily won the councilmember-at-large seat, and Richard Pitcher, who was overwhelmingly elected Ward 4 commissioner.

In Ward 5, however, there appeared to be a tie for the commissioner's seat between Phillip Hodges and Danny Brown, each of whom received 117 votes. The Alexander County clerk's office could not be reached Tuesday night to determine how the race would be resolved.
