Cairo City Council tie still up in the air

CAIRO - For most towns in Southern Illinois, municipal elections ended Tuesday night.
However, in Cairo, things aren't quite over yet.
In a night that saw Ward 5 commissioner Tyrone Coleman defeat incumbent mayor Judson Childs in a hotly contested campaign, there was a tie in the race for Coleman's old seat.
Phillip Hodges and Danny Brown each received 117 votes.
Cairo City Clerk Lori Hasselroad said Wednesday she was still consulting with the city attorney and the Illinois State Board of Elections on how to handle a tie.
"I've never seen anything like it," Hodges said. "It's really different. I just wonder how they're going to handle it."
Even though they were running against each other, both Brown and Hodges said they were good friends. Neither candidate is going to ask for a recount.
"We're just going to let what happens happen," Brown said. "Both of us are just running to help the city."
Brown said he'd be the first to shake hands if Hodges was declared winner.
"That's what we need more of in politics," Brown said.
Hodges is an independent contractor carrier for The Southern Illinoisan.
