REGULAR BOE MEETING - MINUTES |
The Cairo Board of Education held its regular meeting on Thursday, May 19, 2011. Below is an annotated agenda to serve as minutes...
CAIRO BOARD OF EDUCATION
CAIRO SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER ONE
REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2011
6:00 P.M.
AGENDA
CAT Tracks Editor's Note:
UPDATE:
Immediately below is another version of some of what happened at last night's meeting which includes some "Bonus Material". I won't say the "extras" didn't happen (I readily admit to being hearing impaired and regularly thwarted by intentional whispering and a noisy AC unit overhead), but I gotta believe that some of this may have occurred behind closed doors (as I cooled my butt on the steps outside...or were suppose to happen but were forgotten.)
Anyway:
There you have it..."the rest of the story."
POSTSCRIPT:
Since I mentioned the "whispering" (intentional or otherwise), I would be remiss in not giving kudos to Mary Coleman who presided during most of the meeting in the absence of the President and the Vice President. "President Pro Tem" Coleman had VOLUME! It was the others who whispered...
NOTE: Nothing has been changed in the original account below.
I. Call to Order - 6 p.m.
II. Roll Call - In the absence of President McBride and Vice President Harris, Mary Coleman presided. Also answering roll were Moore, Burris, and Coleman. (Brown arrived at 6:04 p.m.)
III. Examples of Excellence: (Actually, the presentation was delayed pending the arrival of some of the participants. Cairo Elementary Principal Allene Houston-Jones made a couple of announcements of up-coming activities. She then introduced 6th Grade Teacher Janet Rose who, in turn introduced four of her students and a "Cairo History Project" that they have been working on. "Miss Jennifer", who has been working with Cairo Elementary students has worked with students in other schools and in each instance has led the students in producing a song about their school. Whereupon, Janet Rose had to ask..."Where's your 'Cairo Song'", which led to a composition which the students presented to the BOE members and the audience. The students were adorned in "Remember the U.S.S. Cairo" T-shirts (with "History is my passion" on the back.) The students are actually selling the shirts to raise money for materials to paint a mural of the U.S.S. Cairo on a building in Cairo (the painting to be done by CJSHS students.) They have further long-range plans designed to break the negative stereotype held by those outside of Cairo. There is also a possibility of producing a video of their efforts to be posted on YouTube. Stay tuned...and don't forget to buy your T-shirt!)
IV. Recognition of Guests/Comments From Public And Employees - None.
V. Approval of Previous Minutes - I think they must have tabled the minutes. There was some whispering/mumbling among the BOE members and I definitely did not hear a roll call to approve.
