WHAT'S BUGGING YOU

Speaking of "skeeters"...

There have been several articles touting the imminent appearance of swarms of mosquitoes. With all the rain and wet conditions accompanying the Flood of 2011, who could argue with that?

Well, just to cover all bases...

I remember similar predictions during past flood seasons...predictions that proved to be false.

The reason given to explain the error of their ways...

The high water level flooded out the areas where the eggs were deposited...drowned the little bast...uh, bugs.

Let us pray...

Buffalo gnats out in force

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Buffalo gnats otherwise known as black flies are out in force.

Conservationists say we have them every year, but all the flood waters are perfect for the annoying critters.

The pests lay their eggs on land that will get flooded.

"They are really tiny, but they have a nasty little bite," said Steve Juhlin, Nature Center Assistant Manager. "The venom they inject can cause some swelling and itching and that kind of thing—especially around the face."

Conservationists say that a windy day is your best bet for avoiding the critters.
