Their efforts were seconded by CE Principal Allene Houston-Jones. Curriculum Coordinator Rose Gayle Pickett and CJSHS Principal Zena Madison told the BOE about plans to reward those students who met or exceeded on the PSAE last year. VIII. Approval of Payment of Bills/Payroll - Prior to approval, President McBride indicated that she wanted to make "a clarification".
CAT Tracks Editor's Note: This "clarification" is discussed at length in the I Am "Somebody" edition of "the rag"...actually a follow-up to "Cairo BOE...October Bills"...the "They Be Trippin'" edition.
Anyway...Motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve payment of bills/payroll.
IX. Informational
- Wind Damage to School Roofs on 7/12/2011 - Hinz Claim Management - The damage is to the roofs of the cottage and the maintenance shed in back of CJSHS. Apparently the claim is for $4,000, but could be expanded up to $6,000. Interim Superintendent Swopes also reported on water damage at CJSHS when a pipe burst, flooding a couple of classrooms...one of them extensively. The pipe in question was closed and rerouted.
- Service Project: Regarding Helping Students With College Options, Questions, and the Application Process. (CAT Tracks Editor's Note: I didn't hear anything about this...maybe it was information contained in the BOE packets.)
- Impact Aid: Re: Alexander County Housing Authority - 100 Riverview ($26,000 lost by not being able to claim) - Interim Superintendent Swopes reported that he had been informed that the District could no longer make a claim for tax money on 100 Riverview (the "High Rise"). This got a rise out of several BOE members who asked the Interim Superintendent to contact the assessor's office, to protest, to get further information as to what had changed.
- Public Notice Re: Superintendent's Search - November 8
& December 13, Remaining Dates - Interim Superintendent Swopes distributed a blue brochure to the BOE members. (The audience was not offered any.) He also distributed these two handouts regarding "responses from persons attending the public community forum on October 11, 2011."
- Report From Auditors - Beussink, Hey, Roe, Seabaugh & Stroder, L.L.C. - Nothing was mentioned about this item. Again...may have been information contained in the BOE packets.
- There was some mumbling about a grant...
- More mumbling...
- Something about a "bus issue". Apparently the District is unhappy with the upkeep and quality of buses being provided by the new bus service.
- Reported that the Energy Grant will need revision (scaled down from the earlier application and award based upon the proposed addition to Cairo Elementary which fell through.) Interim Superintendent Swopes reported that the installation of the new boiler at Cairo Elementary had been completed. One SNAFU...the new boiler does not work with the old thermostats. This will be corrected. (I thought I heard "by December 1st", but I wouldn't swear to it.) Evidently it is "toasty" right now. (BTW: "Toasty" was my choice of word, not theirs. Trying to be careful..."clarifications" have got me as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a Board room full of rocking chairs!)
- Interim Superintendent Swopes informed the BOE that the next negotiations session with teachers would be October 26th at 6 p.m.
- There is a water leak in the roof of the CJSHS Office...a bad leak. The District's architects have been contacted and there is an estimate that it might take $10,000 to repair the roof. Right now, they do not know the origin of the water leak.
