SPECIAL BOE MEETING...MINUTES

The Cairo Board of Education held a special meeting on Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Below is the agenda...preceded by some abbreviated "minutes".

I. The meeting was called to order at 6:36 p.m.

II. Coleman, Harris, Burris, Moore, and McBride answered roll call.

III. CJSHS Principal Zena Madison used the "Employees and Public" section to address the BOE on the need of a part-time band teacher. She informed the BOE of the need (sufficient enrollment) and the decline in electives at the building. She noted that she was using this portion of the meeting because the matter was not on the agenda...and that it needed to be approved by the BOE before it would be considered by the FOP.

IV. The agenda was approved.

V. The BOE voted to enter closed session at 6:41 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 7:21 p.m.

VI. District CEO Justin Miller made the recommendations listed on the agenda below and all were approved by the BOE.

  • For Item B, the motions and votes were done individually.

  • For Item E, it was noted that the contract would begin on August 1, 2011.

  • For Item F, Kelly Shepard was hired as Cairo High School Head Girls Basketball Coach.

  • For Item G, the word "automatic" was deleted from the section of the handbook relating to cell phones and other electronic devices.

Two additional items (not on the original agenda) were approved:

  • To add days as needed for Justin Miller as District CEO in the event that the position of Interim Superintendent was not filled on August 1st. (Your guess is as good as mine. Catty word on the street after the meeting was that maybe Leotis had a vacation scheduled that conflicted with his duty to the District. This, in fact, would be a déjà vu moment...since he missed his very first BOE meeting when he was hired as Superintendent because he had a cruise scheduled. Hmmm...maybe it's one of those "past practice" things. Too bad Leotis doesn't recognize the same for the pee-ons...he who routinely turns down requests for teachers to use Personal Days and/or Association Days. If Leotis did, there wouldn't be an unfair labor practice charge filed against the District for his repeated actions. One of the RHIP things. Then, again, this have may nothing to do with what is really going on. Stay tuned...)

  • Approval to hire James Davis as part-time band instructor at CJSHS.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 7:29 p.m.

CAT Tracks Editor's Note:

A couple of those "I would be remiss" items:

  • BOE President Artie McBride, after calling the meeting to order, acknowledged the noise made by the air conditioner and vowed to be heard...and was.

  • As we filed out of the Board Room for closed session, BOE member Rodney Moore asked if we would like chairs to sit on while waiting...and helped move them out.

Good things come to those who wait...
