PRE-RAZING VIDEO OF DOWNTOWN CAIRO |
If you are a former Cairoite and have this warm and fuzzy mental picture of the Cairo of your youth and are appalled at reports of the razing of its fabled downtown district, this video is for you.
The buildings of downtown Cairo...
So...
Lament if you will. It is only natural to recall with fondness that upon which the unrelenting forces of time and nature have taken their toll. (On a personal note...hair, the waistline, and energy come to mind. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot...and the mind!)
But...
...it was time (way past time) for these dangerous eyesores to go. Any hope of "saving" or "restoring" "downtown Cairo" died a couple of decades ago.
I mean...
Cairo no longer has enough population or money to even reclaim "8th Steet"...where years ago a $1 million grant was used to lay a "brick street to nowhere".
The video also clearly depicts the luscious vegetation (aka weeds) so prevalent throughout the city.
Sigh...
From YouTube...
The first two minutes of the video in particular show the area that is in the process of being razed. (The video actually fails to capture the true ugliness that lies behind the crumbling facade: collapsed roofs, maturing trees, refuse left by those who dwell in abandoned buildings...not to mention the danger to naturally curious kids.)
