SPECIAL BOE MEETING...MINUTES |
The Cairo Board of Education held a Special Meeting for the purpose of discussing/approving personnel issues on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 6 p.m. Below is the agenda followed by the "minutes"...
I. Call To Order - 6 p.m.
II. Roll Call - Coleman, Burris, Gooden, and McBride answered roll call. (Harris arrived at 6:02 p.m.; Brown arrived at 6:12 p.m.)
III. Recognition and Comments from Employees and Public - Carla Thornquist went to the podium and addressed the BOE...making an appeal for the restoration of Art, Music, and Early Reading Intervention. She pointed out that students at CJSHS do not have enough electives to choose from, forcing them to choose things in which they are not interested...that this was not right. She indicated that she had visited the website of the Regional Office of Education and that information there indicated that if intervention efforts are not made in the early grades, children will fall behind by the 4th Grade. She appealed: "You can't take this away from kids." She pointed out that with the $3.8 million in reserve, all of these programs could be restored to the curriculum and still leave plenty of money for emergencies. She closed her remarks by noting the recent clean-up of Cairo...that Cairo was looking so much better...that now was not the time to cut education programs. The BOE thanked Carla for her comments and concern.
