SPECIAL BOE MEETING...MINUTES

The Cairo Board of Education held a special meeting on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 6 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the Superintendent's Search, personnel issues, and other new business. Below is the notice and agenda, followed by the "minutes"...

The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m.

Answering roll call were Coleman, Harris, Brown, Gooden, and McBride. (Moore arrived at 6:08 p.m. Brown departed at 6:28 p.m.)

There were no comments from employees/public.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve the agenda for the special meeting.

As for the "Superintendent's Search"...

I took a lot of notes, but the bottom line:

  • The BOE will conduct their own search rather than pay IASB $5,000 to conduct a search. (Can't argue with that.)

  • The BOE expressed a desire for input from the various "stakeholders"...to be solicited over the next three months, mainly through PSO meetings which all parties will be encouraged to attend.

  • The position will be advertised widely and the deadline for applications will be December 30th.

  • The BOE hopes to hire a new superintendent at its March 15th meeting...her/his term to begin on July 1, 2012.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to enter closed session at 6:48 p.m. The BOE voted to exit closed session at 7:34 p.m.

Interim Superintendent Swopes recommended that Erica Brazier be paid $15 an hour for the position of "Parent Educator". (This is the position that the Financial Oversight Panel put "on hold" at its last meeting. Despite that "hold", the District has evidently given the go ahead for work to begin and voted on tonight's stipend until such time that the FOP gets with the program.) A motion was made, seconded, and approved.

A motion was made, seconded, and passed to adjourn at 7:36 p.m.
