CAIRO HIGH SCHOOL
CHS 1995 EGYPTI...JUNE 21st MINI-RANT |
The good news...
Unlike the infamous strike of 2002, the District chose to make up the school days missed because of the teachers' strike in 1994-95, thus the picture captioned "JUNE 21, 1995 2:45 P.M."
Oh, it was far from fun...
If anybody hates going to school in June more than students, it's teachers! But, at least the students got a full year of education, and the District received its full state and federal funding.
Flash forward...
In the CHS 2002 Egypti, there will be no such picture.
Over the years, Cairo School District officials have consistently refused to learn from their past mistakes...defiantly repeating the old, inventing new ones. In fact, CSD officials may have the copyright to that popular definition of insanity...doing the same things over and over, while expecting different results.
Indeed, District officials seemed intent on only one thing...
...keeping score, looking for any and all opportunities to retaliate.
Still smarting from what they perceived as a loss in 1994-95...
In 2002, the District chose NOT to make up the 17 school days missed.
In making the announcement, the District's attorney (Barney Mundorf) told the media: "It (not making up the strike days) will hurt the teachers more than the District."
Well, (like much of his earlier advice) Barney got it wrong.
Oh, yes...
...each teacher lost thousands of dollars in pay. (You don't get paid if you don't work the days.)
However...
The District lost over $500,000 in state and federal funding by choosing to "blow off" the missed days.
The District's action did not go unnoticed by the Illinois State Board of Education (albeit too late to prevent the damage.)
Thus, the Financial Oversight Panel (aka FOP) was "born" in the 2002-03 School Year and is currently entering the final year of a its 10-year mandate.
